Stephen Ridgeway died in hospital a month after he was assaulted in his Somerset home.

Two men have been arrested on suspicion of murder after a 72-year-old man died in hospital a month after his Somerset home was burgled.

Stephen Ridgeway told police he answered the door of his property in Tenby Road, Keynsham, in the early hours of November 3.

He described how two men forced their way inside before assaulting him and stealing items including alcohol and mobile phones.

Emergency services were called to Mr Ridgeway’s home at about 3am and he was later admitted to hospital, where his condition worsened and he died on December 7.

A man in his thirties and a man in his forties were arrested on suspicion of the murder of Mr Ridgeway on Tuesday, January 7.

They were released on Wednesday, January 8, after being questioned and police said the investigation is continuing.

Avon and Somerset Police, which is investigating the incident, said preliminary findings of a post-mortem examination state that the injuries Mr Ridgeway sustained contributed to his death.

Detective Chief Inspector James Wasiak from the Major Crime Investigation Team continued to appeal for anyone with information or CCTV dashcam footage to come forward.

Anyone with information is asked to call Avon and Somerset Police on 101, giving the reference 5224289518. The independent charity Crimestoppers can be contacted anonymously by calling 0800 555 111, or online.
