Sex and the silver fox

Forget aqua aerobics, the latest senior saviour is between the sheets

There was a time, not so long ago, when the idea of older adults enjoying a healthy and active sex life was either laughed at, cringed at, or avoided in conversation – particularly by the embarrassed young. But attitudes change. A healthier, longer life expectancy means that sex for the 65 to 80-plus is now positively encouraged, because it not only boosts physical and emotional wellbeing but also brings other health benefits. Studies at US and UK universities have found that frequent sex (in one study, “frequent” meant once a week or more), and desire for sexual activity have a positive impact on the brain, leading to better cognitive functioning. As a further bonus for men, good sex can slow the cognitive decline linked to those suffering from erectile dysfunction. Researchers believe a fall in sexual activity for many older adults is often down to social convention, the expectation being that fun and frolics in the bedroom will diminish as we age. The new findings show this isn’t necessarily the case, although other factors do play a significant part in the successful sex lives of seniors. Feeling financially and emotional secure helps boost libido, for example, as does still being in love with long-term partners. The emergence of dating sites for all age groups gives more opportunities for older singles to forge new relationships that can lead to a fulfilling and exciting sex life. Research also shows that for some, sexual satisfaction has actually increased as they’ve got older. This may be down to people having fewer distractions, more time and privacy, plus no worries about unwanted pregnancy. Older adults may also be better able to communicate what they want and need in bed, which can lead to heightened intimacy and connection. In Japan, which has one of the world’s oldest populations, “silver porn” is a big hit for both elderly viewers and elderly participants. Shigeo Tokuda was recognised by the Guinness Book of Records as the world’s oldest porn star when he reached 83, while Maori Tezuka, who specialised in “accommodating grandmother” roles, retired at 80, saying that acting in porn films had been “lively and fun.”
